Some of the combinations are:

3 or more than 3 planets in a house, makes a person confused,the person does not feel happy in motherland and often the person, ends up settling abroad. 12th, 3rd, 9th combination if forming in D4 that also, holds true.

7th lord combination also helps in travel as 7th house is the farthest from lagna.So 7th lord/house has connection with 3,9th,12 can indicate foreign travel .

5th lord combination with 3,9,12 gives travel for education or because of children.

2nd house combination with 3,9,12 gives travel for business or money.

Affliction to 4th house in D1 and d4. Especially in D4. If 4th house is not afflicted in D1 and other yogas of foreign settlement are there, that will take you to foreign land and you will live as well but with 4th house affliction especially in D4 will ensure, you will be able to have your own house in foreign land.

10th and 11th house combination also needs to be seen with 3,9,12 as it also gives, travel or settlement because of job or professional front.

At the end, these combinations needs to be carefully analysed and then dasha ,bhukti needs to be seen , coz sometimes the combinations are there but if dasha bhukti is not running , the person will face obstacles.

Exalted Planets makes Poor and Penniless

Many exalted planets have been seen in the horoscope of a poor man and debilitated planets in a  rich man's horoscope. How does this happen?

            Normally many debilitated planets in a horoscope make "Neech Bhang Raja Yoga” and similarly many exalted planets give “Uccha Bhang Daridra Yoga”. Moreover, the native with many exalted planets is a man of principles and unfit for worldy success. One or two debilitated planets help the native to aquire wealth by improper means in this Kali Yuga.

        Though the general rule holds good in some cases. In reality, exalted planets may give such daridra(penniless) or similar to that can happen when two exalted planets aspects each other. The person's mindset will have a drastic change and move away from normal social setup or withdraw his material acquisitions and go on to live a minimalist life.

Tapaswi Yoga

One of the most misunderstood persons in their surrounding and their social life will have Tapaswi yoga in their charts. 

They are mostly "Ambiverts" behavioral type.

They find solace being alone most of the time although crowded atmosphere too doesn't bother them much.

Life path or lifestyle if keenly observed will be like that of a monk, Saturn if in movable signs will make them suffer much due to change of habits or routines at certain long intervals of time, ex., for 2 or 3 years they would live a same routine life and after that different routine with varied habits. Saturn in fixed signs will help them better focus on their destiny path.

Some more tapaswi definitions.

1. Saturn is the planet of hard-work. Ketu is the planet of selflessness, evolution and rising above the shackles of the material world. Venus is the planet of passion. If two of these planets are together and the third planet aspects them, it gives Tapaswi yoga.(Footnote: Tapaswi is a person who performs tapas. He forgets everything and pursues something single-mindedly. Tapaswis usually dedicate themselves to research and uncover the secrets of the world. A tapaswi can be into yoga, mantra, tantra, astrology or even physics or chemistry.) If AK (chara atma karaka – soul) also aspects or conjoins the planets involved in Tapaswi yoga, this tapas will be more fruitful and will be a continuation of the efforts of the past lives (AK is one's link with the past lives).

2. If the Karakamsa (The sign occupied by AK in Navamsha) with Kethu has the aspect of Sani, he will become a Tapaswi or recluse or be a dependent and servant under somebody.

3. If the 7th from Karakamsa is occupied or aspected by Sani, the wife will be older or will be sickly or will be a tapaswini or a woman who will be engaged in religious meditations

"Tapaswi" does not necessarily mean a spiritual person. It only means a dedicated and austere pursuer of something. For example, an atheistic scientist who spends 18 hours a day in lab trying to decode a genetic code may be tapaswi.

Saturn gives hard work and tenacity. Venus gives passion, discipline and austerity. Ketu gives the desire to transcend and the desire to understand the unknown.

If AK aspects or joins planets causing Tapaswi yoga, then the yoga will result in progress of the soul.

If these planets are well-disposed in D-60 also, it makes the yoga powerful. Tapasya cannot come in one life just out of thin air - it has to be the result of strong desires from past life.

My chart(PVR) is an example. I have lagna in Virgo, Ketu in Leo, Jupiter in Libra, Sun in Pisces, Moon & Rahu in Aquarius and other four planets in Aries. Venus and Saturn are together in the 8th house (of occult and pursuit of unknown), aspected by Ketu from 12th. This gives a strong Tapaswi yoga. AK is Moon and he aspects Aries. This gives permanency to the yoga once activated.

When is the yoga activated? Use Lagnamsaka dasa (Narayana dasa of rasi chart seeded from lagnamsaka instead of lagna), to see how one's dharmic self (navamsa lagna) manifests physically (rasi chart). See Sanjay's "Narayana dasa" for examples. I gave my Lagnamsaka dasa calculations in a previous post. You may see Leo dasa running from 1993 to 1998. Leo and Aries take part in Tapaswi yoga and their dasas can activate the yoga.

During 1993-1998, I restarted meditation and got seriously into astrology. I read many books, experimented with a lot of techniques, pondered deeply over a lot of things and dedicated all my free time to astrology research. There were many days when I slept at 3 am and got up at 6 am. I passionately and ardently pursued astrology. The Tapaswi yoga was indeed activated in this dasa.

In addition to the Tapaswi yoga, there are many raja yogas involving Ar and Li. These yogas will ensure that the fruits of my astrological pursuits will be useful to the world. These yogas will be activated in Libra dasa (2003-2009). The fruits of my tapasya started in 1993- 1998 will start to be visible and be useful to the world from 2003-2009.

the Lagna or Lagna lord is involved, then this makes for a strong yoga, one in which the native is very sincere and aware of their austerities and practices.

Travelling abroad is one of the cherished dreams of most Indians, and thanks to the blooming IT industry and the increased demand for English-efficient and conscious work-force, a large number of Indians are traveling abroad and realizing their ambition. 

Though, speaking of Indians, the urge to explore new lands, to get familiarized with other cultures, and to just experience the novelty of a distant land is sure to tickle the explorer/adventure-centre of everyone’s brain. We see that some persons flourish well abroad, while instances are not wanting where the foreign jaunt is a “dream turned into a nightmare.” Let us see what hints astrology can offer on this.

Astrological Pointers for Foreign Travel/ Stay

Generally, 9th and 12th houses of a horoscope are the relevant houses of the chart to be studied in this regard. If these houses fall in moveable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) or water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), then there is a possibility of foreign travel (or travel over the seas!). It is obvious from the above that Cancer is a powerful sign in this regard as it is both a moveable sign and a watery sign. Thus, if the 9th or 12th houses of a horoscope fall in these signs, or if the 9th or 12th house lords fall in these signs, you may deduce that foreign travel is indicated for such natives.

The motive of the foreign travel can be deduced by planetary influences. For example, if the 4th house lord of a horoscope is placed in the 9th house which happens to be a moveable sign, or a watery sign, and is conjunct the 12th house lord, you may deduce that the native will be traveling abroad for higher education (4th house stands for basic education; 9th house stands for advanced courses/ specializations).

If the 4th house lord is in the 12th house (the 12th house being indicative of foreign jaunts as discussed above), then the native may find it more auspicious to stay abroad. I have personally come across natives who feel more “at home” abroad, and they find it easier to live by Indian spiritual traditions when they live abroad than when they live in India. Inscrutable are the ways of fate and highly interesting are the astrological combinations that provide clues about destiny! 

Association of 5th, 9th, and 12th lords in the dasamsha indicate traveling abroad for professional reasons. These persons are usually employed as skilled work-force (scientists, professors, etc.) abroad. If there is a Dharma-karmaathipathi yoga associated with the 12th house, the native may go on to win prestigious awards in the foreign country, and in some cases even get elected to high constitutional posts like Senator/ Governor/ Chairman of Board of Studies, etc. Curiously similar combinations will be found in the horoscopes of Indian Envoys posted abroad. Similar are the results when 10th and 12th lords of the dasamsha have mutual aspect or association.

It should be noted that while moveable signs indicate travels away from homeland and hence might indicate long stay abroad, common signs indicating foreign travel signify that the person might travel a lot to foreign lands, but there will be no extended stay there, i.e. they will visit the foreign lands on professional visits of a short duration – may be to a maximum of 5 years at a stretch and return back to the homeland.

Periods When Foreign Travels Are Indicated

When there are adequate prospects in the natal chart for going abroad, the native may undertake foreign travels during any of the periods mentioned below,

1) Dasa/ bhukti of the 9th lord or the 12th lord, or the planets that are in association with the 12th lord (by placement or aspect).

2) Dasa/ bhukti of the planets that are associated with Moon

3) Dasa/ bhuktis of Rahu, Venus, or Moon if these planets are in the 12th house.

4) Dasa/ bhuktis of exalted/ debilitated planets in the horoscope.

5) Sub-periods of Ketu and Rahu in the major period of Rahu.

6) Jupiter bhukti in Saturn dasa (if Jupiter owns 12th house)

7) Dasa/ bhukti of the planets associated with the 9th lord.

8) When Saturn in its transit crosses the natal position of Sun.

9) When Jupiter in its transit aspects the 9th or 12th house, or aspects the 9th/ 12th house lords.

10) Foreign jaunts are experienced even during sade-sathi.

11) If the Munda – a sensitive point based on annual progressed horoscope falls in the 9th house along with other favourable transits.

Gandanta is the junction points in the zodiac that a particularly connected with times of soul growth. This is the position of the zodiac where the where the solar and lunar Zodiac meet. These points are at the junctions of Pisces (Revati)- Aries (Ashwini), Cancer (Ashesha)- Leo (Magha), Scorpio (Jyeshta)- Sagittarius (Mula). They are especially powerful in giving Karmic effects.

Gand means a knot. 

Anta means the end. 

Gandanta means the knot at the end. 

A well-tied knot is that it is very difficult to unravel. The more you try to untie the knot, the tighter it becomes. Gandanta represents a knot within ourselves, a deep issue, which we are trying to reconcile with. When planets are placed in these positions, then they face uncertainty as they try to unravel the secret knot that will take them on to the next level. These issues make themselves felt in the life of the individual, through personal relationships, traumatic events or inner struggles. 

When life crystallises at a certain we have to go through a particularly trying time to prepare our minds for the next step in the journey of our soul. This can only take place once you have reconciled with where you are at present. You cannot deny the present, if you want to move on to the future. The positioning of planets in the Gandanta is particularly powerful. 

This indicates a very special purpose for this birth. There can be many difficulties to be faced, adjustments to be made in life as we move towards one level of spiritual growth into the second level. This can be a very good position as well as it can create balance as you learn to come to terms with the reality of today. That is essential if you have to move forward. This mental adjustment usually opens the knot and brings happiness

Aries or Pisces are the gandanta navamshas but not all Aries and Pisces navamshas are gandanta. So when analysing them, you must be aware of this. Three planets placed in Aries navmasha, only one may be struggling with the gandanta energy.

The exact degrees of Gandanta are 2 ghati(48') from the edge of the sign. So the closer the planet is at the edge of the rashi, the more it is tied in a spiritual knot and harder it is to unravel the knot.

There are three kinds of Gandanta:

• The Lagna Gandanta
• The Nakshatra Gandanta
• The Tithi Gandanta

The Lagna Gandanta is when the ascendant sign falls within 14 minutes of these degrees either side. The Nakshatra Gandanta is when the Moon is situated within 48 minutes either side of these points. Tithi is the lunar day and Tithi gandanta happens at the end of the tithi and beginning of another.

The belief is when life crystallises at a certain point then we journey towards the higher manifestation of the soul and the consciousness. We have to go through a particularly trying time to prepare our minds for the next step in the journey of our soul. If you are born in any of the gandanta, you can expect some spiritual difficulties in this birth. A lack of support, a sense of transformation.

The Moon in the Nakshatra Gandanta is particularly powerful as also shows that one is born at the end of a dasha. Just after birth, he dasha changes, bring turmoil at the beginnig of life. Although this can happen to the parents as we are unaware as a child of what is happening. Its effect is with us for the rest of life. There can be many difficulties to be faced, adjustments to be made in life as we move towards one level of spiritual growth into the second level.

The Gandanta

The gandanta always takes place between Water and Fire Signs and navamshas. Water and Fire- Agni and apas are two contrary elements. Fre can heat up the water and water can extinguish fire. So negotiating this area of chart is complex but it is also the area where the maximum spiritual developmet takes place. Any planet placed in gandanta is in a difficult position and will have to face material issues in regard to its house rulerships and significations. If Venus is in gandanta, then relationships and marriage will be the area of insecurity.

The Pisces/Revati and Aries/ Ashwini Gandanta shows the ending of one cycle of soul growth and beginning of it’s next stage. This is the level that the inner self begins it’s journey of life. Each journey implies within it an ending of a cycle. If the Moon is in the Pisces portion of the Gandanta, it relates to ending experiences, where the soul has reached it’s full maturity at the present level of soul growth and it’s ready to move onto another cycle of life where a different set of issues will confront him. 

In the Aries/ Ashwini portion of Gandanta, here the soul is connected to the past life but knows it is at the threshold of another. This creates confusion and powerful influences which are at times difficult to understand. Is this an old experience you are living through or there are fresh encounters to undertake. Moon’s position in this juncture reveals a past life connection which is strong.

The Cancer/ Ashlesha and Leo/ Magha Gandanta is where the soul endings it’s search and now finally moves towards it’s full involvement into material life. The Cancer/ Ashlesha stage is where the search in the experience of life is complete. Psychological changes happen. The ruling deity of Ashlesha is Naga - the wise serpents. At this stage there is the shedding of the skin to grow another one. This experience which changes the mind and the psyche can be extremely painful but it is necessary for the soul to grow into another dimension. 

At the Magha/ Leo stage, the soul is finally getting ready to experience life at a material level. This is a junction point, therefore the intellectual changes which it has already experienced at the Cancer/ Ashlesha level are still very strong. There is again the connection to the past life here.

Scorpio/Jyeshta and Sagittarius Mula Gandanta is the most difficult one as it moves the inner soul towards it’s final direction towards merging with the universal consciousness. This is the stage where the material ties are being shattered and the soul realises it’s true spiritual direction. This is where the maximum churning of the inner emotions take place. Even when the soul recognises it’s path towards it true nature, it fights against it. This is never an easy task. It creates many psychological or physical blocks that need to be tackled with great maturity. 

At the Scorpio/ Jyeshtha stage, the is immense churning of the inner emotions, this is where material sheaths break up and it leads to an inner change. if there is a resistance to a change then it makes it very difficult for the person. On a material level this can be unfortunates whereas on a spiritual level it leads towards activating your Kundalini or latent power. At the Mula/ Sagittarius stage, the soul recognises it has to change and in many ways it already has. But it still remains ties to it’s past life and it’s earthly needs which Moola which means the root suggests. This roots is buried in the ground or in deep material realms and it need to break the outer crust of earth to reach towards it’s higher potential.

General concepts:

The results of any house are dependent upon the correct interpretations of the following things:

1. The strengths, aspects, conjunctions and placements of the lord of the house.

2. The natural qualities of the house, its lord, the planets situated in it, and the aspects on the house.

3. The strength of the house itself.

4. Yogas influencing the house, its lord etc.

5. Exaltations or debilitations of the lord.

6. Conditions of the lord (whether favourable or adverse).

7. Condition of the aspected house lord under consideration.

8. Same thing applies in the Navamsa chart.

9. The age, position, status and sex of the person.

All of the above points are required to be properly weighed before any results can be concluded. The results are generally predicted on the above basis only. Now the question arises as to how accurate of a result do we get from the above concepts? 

Much depends of course on the accuracy of the interpretive skills of the astrologer. It is always easy to look back in hindsight and find the answer after the fact, but in order to be able to accurately predict an event or give the probable dates for an event, applying these same laws with skill and precision takes much practice. 

It is said that the result of a timed event is experienced in either the major, the sub period or the sub-sub period of the: 

a) Lord of the house

b) Planets aspecting the house

c) Planets posited in the house

d) Planets aspecting the lord of the house

e) Planets in association with the lord of the house.

All of the above statements do not prove to be correct in any case other than at random. Hardly a single event of the life can be predicted when using the above method. These laws cannot be proven universally in all cases.

Dasa Vargas Planets in Gopuramsa

Dasa Vargas - Knowing planetary strength and its effects through the position of particular planet in 10 divisional charts.

(1) Rasi chart, (2) D-2, (3) D-3, (4) D-7, (5) D-9, (6) D-10, (7) D-12, 8.D-16, (9) D-30, and, (10) D-60.

The amsa said to be occupied by a planet and the corresponding count of divisional charts – from the above list – in which it occupies its moolatrikona, rasi of exaltation or an own rasi 

Out of all Goupuramsa is more prominent in several locally famous people charts, famous doesn't mean celebrity charts but those people around your town/locality who are famous and live a socially aggreable rich lifestyle

A single planet in chart attaining Gopuramsa combined with yoga combinations and right Dasa or Antar of planet at rightful age will do wonders in one's life.

Gopuramsa – If Planet in 4 divisional chart of Dasvarga is placed in own sign or excellent or Mooltrikona sign then that planet is in Gopuramsa.

A planet that has attained a Gopuramsa secures to the person concerned with good intellect, wealth, lands, cows and house.

2 vargas - A planet in a Parijatamsa will make the native respectable, endowed with many good qualities, wealth, happiness, power and dignity. 

3 vargas - A planet situated in an Uttamamsa will make him modest, clever and of good behaviour. 

4 vargas - A planet that has attained a Gopuramsa secures to the person concerned good intellect, wealth, lands, cows and house. 

5 vargas - A planet placed in a Simhasanamsa will enable the native to become the friend of a king or one on a par with him.

6 vargas - A planet that has attained a paravatamsa will make the native endowed with very good horses, elephants, vehicles and other princely appendages.

7 vargas - A person in whose nativity a planet has reached a Devalokamsa will be a king widely renowned for his good qualities. 

8 vargas -Brahmalokamsa / Amara / Kumkumamsa - will be a king

9 vargas - A planet that has gained an Airavatamsa/Iravata in a person’s nativity by kings. 

10 vargas - A planet in a Suralokamsa/Sreedhaamaamsa / Vaiseshikamsas / Vysshnavamsa secures to the native good luck, wealth, corn, children and kingship.

NOTE: This group is very important and some yogas – special combinations – make use of these amsas. 

For example, lagna lord or ghati lagna lord in Simhaasanaamsa would make one very famous. A quadrant lord with good amsabala in dasavarga makes one very successful. Readers should memorize the above amsas.

If at a birth a planet be weak in all the 10 Vargas, it will cause the death/destruction/grief/calamity/unhappiness of the native.
